Abstract

Aim: Awareness for the necessity of research of trauma-related disorders in people with ID has been rising over the last two decades. Findings show a higher prevalence of abuse in people with ID, indicating a special vulnerability for longterm and multiple abuse. Moreover posttraumatic outcomes go beyond those of neurotypic people, making symptoms rather comparable to Complex PTSD than PTSD. Conventional assessment instruments are only partially applicable. There exist different approaches to assess trauma history and PTSD in the ID population. Only recently questionnaires designed for people with ID have been developed. We aim to identify best-practice assessment.

Method: We are conducting expert-interviews including all relevant stakeholder groups proving care for people with ID by using the Delphi Method. Questions concern the usefulness and feasibility of conventional assessment methods for trauma history, PTSD and CPTSD including the ICD-11 Trauma Questionnaire, measures for children and the ID-specific measures IES-ID and TIF.

Results: This paper will present findings from the Delphi process on assessment methods in the population with ID until July 2016.

Conclusion: The implications for assessment possibilities will be discussed.
